Our co-founder and co-Creative Director Georgie not only loves to travel but is perpetually on the hunt for interior inspiration, and last week she was in Marrakech. Among the many treasures she discovered on her trip, Moroccan-inspired tiles were the jewels that really stood out for Georgie. A style we are all now familiar with, their ability to infuse any space with rich colour, pattern, and texture is second to non. Here is the G R Design Studio guide to the best Moroccan tiles currently on the market.
Zellige Tiles
Zellige tiles are one of Morocco’s most celebrated contributions to tile-making and are currently hot interior news. Known for their often vibrant colours and glossy light reflective qualities, these textural tiles are often fitted butted-together with minimal or no grouting. Imperfection is part of their perfection.
(Above left) These handcrafted colourful mosaic Zellige tiles from Otto Tiles are the most beautiful colour palette and will add texture and interest to any indoor or outdoor space.
(Above centre) Again from Otto Tiles, these Moroccan blue & white stripe tiles are entirely handmade and will add a touch of Marrakech to your interior design.
(Above right) With a slightly more contemporary and abstract twist, these Moroccan Blue Jean patterned Zellige tiles from Otto Tiles combine modern geometric shapes and traditional handmade clay artistry for the first time, and the result is, well, lets just say we’re obsessed!
Bejimat Tiles
Bejmat tiles deserve equal admiration for their understated chic and versatility. Bejmat are usually rectangular blended clay tiles, also glazed but known for their more matte finish and have a very distinctive raw aesthetic. Traditionally used in flooring, Bejmat tiles can be laid in various patterns such as brick-style, herringbone, or chevron.

(Above centre) Otto Tiles have done it again with these mellow camel colour Bejimat tiles. We just can’t get enough of the handmade finish and texture and they look gorgeous in this shower.

Traditional Moroccan Patterns
The joy of Moroccan style tiling is the ability to mix and match. You can really inject some visual impact into a room with their and beautiful bold patterns.

(Above centre) Another one from the Marrakech range at Fired Earth, Targa is hand made terracotta tile and would look fabulous mixed with an injection of bright colours..
(Above right) From Fired Earth, the Marrakech Mabrouka glazed terracotta tile is a more subtle option and is perfectly suited to a kitchen splashback.
The team at G R Design Studio would love to help you with your project. Please do get in touch to discuss further.
